2004-09-16 - 2:05 p.m. Heroic Remember when heroes lived by a code that was above the ones we followed? When they had to be special people, doing special things at special times? One too many Everyday Heroes columns and all the sudden the heroic is just someone doing their job without thinking. The rules and procedures are the heroes again, and the people mere tools -- good tools! Heroes used to be individualists with society's best interests at heart. Now we've made them easily comprehensible. They're following the Eighteen Great Secrets of Heroes, available in bookstores everywhere. They're saving their neighborhood from obesity with the Atkins Diet. They're working hard through the night (at time-and-a-half pay, we might mention) to restore power during storms. Did the incomprehensible become too threatening? The unpredictable, too scary? Why have our heroes been emasculated?
